Why we don’t stick to our resolutions

Most of us making New Year’s resolutions hardly ever keep them. I’m not sure if it stems from lack of motivation, lack of support, or lack of resources. It could also have a lot to do with our belief system. Our belief in ourselves about what we can accomplish. Are we confident, are we afraid of failure and so on.

I asked 100 people why don’t they stick to their resolutions and here is what they told me:

  1. They try to do it alone.
  2. Their resolutions are to hefty.
  3. They give up on themselves to easily.
  4. Not enough time.
  5. Lack of support.

These are all valid, as I have used these statements at some point. But these, at the end of the day, are still all excuses, and when we learn to forge ahead in spite of all these challenges, we can make a FIRE happen.

Here are a few things, I’ve come up with to help us get over the hump:

Surround yourself with people who inspire you. People who push you beyond your limits, even when you think you can’t, they will help you get results.

Breakdown your goals in small segments so they won’t seem so large. Instead of saying I will be a millionaire by the time I turn 40, maybe you can say, I’ll earn 50K a year for x amount of years. This is just an example.

Try to set benchmarks so you won’t give up so easily. Lastly, we truly make time for what “we feel” is important to us. I don’t really have a lot to offer about this one, because this is a pet peeve of mine. “I don’t have enough time,” yet you sit and watch television,  play on your phone, or on your technology device instead of putting in the work to reach your goals.
